Can anyone tell me how to drop a pin at my current location in order to share that location with someone trying to find me? I thought I had done this before and texted the location, but can't figure out how I did it with the newer Maps app.

You don't need to drop a pin to do this. You can just tap the blue dot on your current location, then tap the blue arrow to the right of the banner that appears and tap Share a Location. (If you want to drop a pin, tap the bottom right corner and tap Drop Pin.)
