How do I delete an IOS update that was downloaded in iTunes but not yet installed on iPad

I am currently running IOS 5.1.1 on my iPad. When IOS 6 came out, I connected my iPad to my computer and checked for the update through iTunes 10.7.0.21. When it found it, I had it only download it and not install it. I have yet to install IOS 6 and I now see that the iPad shows IOS 6.01 as an update. But, if I connect the iPad to my computer and fire up iTunes, it says IOS 6 is ready to be installed.

How do I remove IOS 6 from iTunes and have it recheck and find IOS 6.01 without installing the IOS 6 first? Is it possible. I tried removing the iPad2,3_6.0_10A403_Restore file from the c://users/USER/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/iTunes/iPad Software Updates folder and restart iTunes but it still tells me that IOS 6 is ready to be installed.

I would like to remove IOS 6 from iTunes so that I can download the IOS 6.01 version and go straight to that instead of installing IOS 6 first and then having to download and install IOS 6.01 after.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

James Ward4,

Thanks for your quick reply.

Although I could install directly to the iPad, I prefer to go through iTunes so I have a copy of the install file just in case of install issues.

As for downloading the newer update to iTunes, could you elaborate on that. The only way I know how to download the update is to connect the iPad to the computer and fire up iTunes and then have it check for updates. Problem now is that since IOS 6 is sitting there waiting to be installed, I don't have the option to check for updates, just to install IOS 6.

As for installing IOS 6 first and then installing IOS 6.01, I was hoping to avoid the double install if I could while still going through iTunes.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

I can't swear to this, but if you update via WiFi, you will be downloading iOS 6.0.1 since it is the most recent version.

If not, install iOS 6 via iTunes and the download the incremental update via WiFi. It will take so much less time for the incremental update via WiFi, because you will not have to download and install the entire iOS again. It will just download the incremental update over WiFi. If you go through iTunes for 6.0.1 - it will start all over again and download the entire iOS all over again.

Demo,

Thanks for jumping in. If I just update via Wifi to IOS 6.01, how does iTunes handle it when I connect the iPad to the computer and open up iTunes? Will it notice the newer version and delete the IOS 6 file or will the IOS 6 file just live in the update folder forever?

I realize it is only a an 800 MB file but there is no need having it sit there if it is not going to be used.

Honestly, I can't tell you what will happen for sure, but it makes sense to me that the downloaded iOS file will remain on your hard drive. iTunes will recognize the fact that the iPad has been updated, but I believe that the .ipsw file will remain on the computer. If you install via iTunes, I'm pretty sure that it will trash the file what the installation is complete.

I have updated over WiFi every time since iOS 5 came out so I really can't remember now how it took place. Since you have already downloaded the entire iOS for iOS 6, why don't you just install it now via iTunes and let iTunes do its thing (check the trash after you update) and the update to iOS 6.0.1 via WiFi.

Demo,

Thanks again for your thoughts. I guess in the grand scheme of things, it is not really worth the hassle trying to figure out how to abort the IOS 6 sitting on my computer waiting to be installed so I will just follow your suggestion and let iTunes install IOS 6 and then update the iPad to IOS 6.01.

I usually keep the install file because I use TinyUmbrella to backup my .shsh files so that if I ever want to downgrade, I have the option to do so. I haven't yet, but with the small issues IOS 6 has been having, this was the reason for me waiting to update the iPad. I guess it is time to bite the bullet and do the install.

Thanks to all who have responded.

Unbeknownst to us when we responded, the OP's device is jail broken. He didn't share that information with us when he as seeking advice.

Obviously you will find users on this forum that have had issues with the iOS updates. This forum is the "hospital" where the patients (iPads with issues) come to be treated. The 100,000,000 iPad users that don't have problems with their devices and not going to post here to sing the praises of their iDevices. They are happily and productively using their iPads, iPhones and iPod Touch's without incident and using them with great satisfaction I'm sure.
