Q: G5 Quad: Liquid cooling system ok?

Do the liquid-cooling systems in the Quad G5 work ok? Have there been any reports of them leaking?

Oh yea there was this really bad Quad leak last week.

You see there was this LOUD BANG, followed by a pop noise. So this guy opens up the side of his Quad and see's the cover to his processors is a bit loose. He removes the cover and next thing he's covered in this green burning acid and it's melting his eyeballs and everything.

    Sorry couldn't resist. :P

Seriously the liquid cooling works wonderful and I haven't heard of any leaks from any liquid cooled PowerMac.

You can see what it looks like here

Here is how you can test for leaks.

    Brilliant website!

Thinking about repair costs after 1 year warranty expires with a CPU undeneath a liquid seal, coolant, radiators, pumps, scuba gear... It made me buy Applecare.

    No problems six months in.

My cpu coolant leaked after about 6 months, and now a year later, my machine has leaked again.

I will conntinue to buy apple care because the first time the bill was 3700 AUD (it blew the power supply and fried the logic board.

Not sure what the damage will be this time....

I am very disappointed that I have had two leaks when everyone says they don't leak.

As the oldest liquid-cooled PowerMacs are starting to approach two years of age, we're starting to hear reports of leaks in the cooling system. I expect we'll hear of more as time goes by, but it's too soon to say how common this problem will be.

When Apple gets enough reports of leaks, they'll know what the weak points are, so they might be able to improve reliability of the system. Maybe they've already improved it on later systems - time will tell.

I've got AppleCare for mine, so I'm not going to worry until January '09, though a failure would still be a major inconvenience.

This sounds bad. I guess any leak is bad, but if you get one does it really leak into the power supply ? Would they not have designed this with consideration for the effects of a leak in the first instance. Sounds like a fire hazzard....

When you got the leaks did you do anything eg. move the system or power on/off or did it just leak out over time with no known cause ?

You go drive with your car for an hour and then try to open the valve from your radiator.

Simple. When a liquid gets hot in a closed system, then the liquid will expand. When you try to open it or when it starts to leak instanly, then it will (exploded).

This is what happen with the cool system in the computer. Nice if you have an expensive carpet.

I want to know if Apple cover this also?

Apple comes with an external new cooling system.

    I've got you now.

Stepping-back a little Apple must have had a tough choice several years ago when faced with IBM's heat characteristics for our dual-core CPUs running at 2.5GHz. (and the 2.7GHz too). To increase perfromance for the G5 they decided to design and implement these liquid cooling systems. Its another step in active cooling to get the perfromance Apple wanted. Ballsey, but so far reliable and very quiet.

Nobody is perfect, but as a big computer company, you should accept also the consequences if something occur with the system and take care about the consumer.

We all pay allot of money for the system and their services, but I am really disapointed.

I wait already four weeks for a new G5 2.7 dual Power Mac.
    See or hear nothing!
