When I try to download the update iOS 5.1.1 (ipad1) window pops up and says "there was an error downloading update, please try again later". I have tried several times over approx. 4 months, and it always says that. What can I do?

Have you tried temporarily disabling your firewall and anti virus software?
Have you tried using a different computer? Transfer all purchases from the iPad into iTunes on your computer, backup the iPad and sync your iPad with your own iTunes and you can try using another computer to update and then go back to your own computer, restore from the backup and sync with iTunes again in order to restore all of your content.
