Need help! Screen says wheel test?

Try to click menu, select, or play and see if that gets the iPod out of the test.

If that doesn't work, the only way to get out of that is to reset the iPod by holding down Menu+Select for 6 seconds...
Resetting iPod

It may take multiple attempts. It may work better if the iPod is connected to power. Finally, the above link has tips if the iPod is not resetting.

If you cannot reset the iPod after multiple attempts and have tried all of the above, you will have to wait for the battery to die, then charge the iPod back up.

What causes this wheel test screen to appear in the
first place?
Is it random or does it occur after an event or

The wheel test is part of diagnostic mode. It appers whenever the iPod is in diagnostic mode and is told to run the wheel test.

Also, the iPod will not usually enter diagnostic mode by itself. Certain buttons have to be held down to get it to enter diagnostic mode.

Nothing I do is getting this to start again, it just says Fail again! Should I just let the battery run down

Those certain buttons, I might add, are the reset ones (center + menu) then center + I<< button while the Apple logo is showing.
