iPod Nano 7G won't pair with blue tooth headphones

I've tried my etymotic ety8 heaphones and Sony blue tooth headphones and neither have shown up on my iPod when it's searching for devices. I see where the nano supports A2DP and AVRCP BT protocols which is the same as my Ety8's so not sure why this is happening unless my iPod is possible defective.

iPod nano (7th generation), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Pairing with another Bluetooth® device:

• Make sure the earphones are OFF.

• Press/hold the POWER button on the R earphone for about 10 seconds.

• The LED on R earphone will rapidly flash green when ready for pairing.

• The earphones will stay in a discoverable mode for five minutes or until pairing is complete.

• If a passkey is requested, enter "0000"

Note: Bluetooth transmitter pairing varies. For best results, consult the user instructions for the specific device being paired with these earphones.
