You cannot downgrade your new Macintosh to Lion because of compatibility issues. For one I don't recall Lion supporting ivy bridge yet. Or 4-16 GB ram. Or a Fusion Drive/SSD. But you can try dual boot if you have a Lion USB recovery tool. I doubt it'll work without crashing a lot.

Direct installation of an OS older than the machine

was shipped with will not work. This has always been

the case. Especially in the case of a full version

difference.

Depending what you want to do with Lion however, you

could install Lion in a virtual machine using Parallels or

VMware Fusion. You could then have Lion and Mountain

Lion running at the same time. This works quite well unless

what you want to do in the virtual machine is very graphics

intensive.

I was trying to clone my friends Lion 10.8.2 macbook pros system drive to his new Mac mini and the clone process went fine using carbon copy cloner, but now it will not boot at all not even from the internal recovery mt lion disc. The mini seems to have some kind of new issue that I have never come across before. The mini only seems to boot via the factory installed system. So not sure what to do at this point as that has been wiped with the clone copy, it won't boot on any external firewire or USB system drives. My new 2012 MacBookpro can boot off any of them via FireWire or USB 2. I wonder of the mini came with 10.8.3 or if it is need of a firmware update.

Any ideas on how to get this mini up and running with a fresh install would be a help.

Actually, it's possible, since exclusively 10.7.5 includes a kernel for ivy bridge, the micro architecture used in the mini of 2012. The problem is it does not include it as a part of platform support.plist, so you get a denied sign. Install with a supported mac, making sure you use the installer for 10.7.5, select destination to a usb flash drive 8gb or larger. do all required processes said by the installer, might include a reboot. Then go back to your standard install and go to this place: /System/Library/coreservices/platformsupport.plist If you do not delete this file, you will get the famous smoking sign without the cigarrete at boot once the usb is plugged in to your mini and you select it from the boot options menu. If you do delete this file, then you will get the Apple Logo and spinner, and you will get the initial setup. Go through it, and the, if you reach the desktop with the galaxy from 10.7 you're done. Funnily this very release of os x also had support for hd 4000, so you will also get full graphics acceleration. I can get you a video from my mini booting lion in 2012 model, in verbose. I will open about this mac, and then you look at darwin kernel version, go to wikipedia, and match that version to the os x release version. That will prove to you that it is not faked. Also in about this mac says Mac OS X, not OS X, and if I had faked it it would read OS X 10.7.5, the real one is Mac OS X 10.7.5. Also notice the dock lights for apps, they're full ovals not underlines like in 10.8 mountain lion.
