LTE not available on LTE enabled network in Belgium (Belgacom)

I was very excited about the opening of the first public LTE network in Belgium by the carrier Belgacom.

This carrier runs LTE on 1800MHz which is supported by my european iPhone 5.

Apparently Apple blocks access or is not willing to provide a carrier settings update for us to access this LTE network?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.1

Apple today announced that iPhone 5 will support LTE on 36 new networks next week.

You will likely receive a carrier update over-the-air, or prehaps iOS 6.1 will be released.

David; I quote Mister Cook:

"Next week," said Tim Cook, "we're adding 36 more carriers for LTE support. These carriers will be in countries that we are not currently supporting LTE."

so do not count Proximus will be one of these 36 "approved" carriers

Looks like iOS 6.1 has been launched, with 4G support for Proximus. However, only for the ipad.

It's just like buying a car and you only are allowed to use the 5th gear, when using gasoil of a cheap gas station, when using gasoil of a gas station like Total you have to buy another car with the same engine, but less options to use a fifth gear.

Excuses, but Apple is disappointing me at the moment.

Don't the people at Apple realize such things are going to blow up in their faces rather sooner than later?

Anyway, I got LTE on my iPhone working, and I'll be happy to tell fellow iProximussers that the best LTE network in Belgium is now iPhone-compatible for the small price of giving up your MMS (who still uses that thing?) 🙂

Middle finger to Mobistar and Apple. Cheers!

so Apple; you can censurate this as much as you want;

what you apperently forget is that Early adaptors are complaining; Check your marketing lessons; Those EA's are angels spreading the word!

Now simply thinking what is a couple of hundred complaints .. is acting arrogant!

Worse is that our favorit brand is now heading a direction that we do not like; controlling us like caddle!!

I do agree, and I must say I feel ashamed now that I have been such a loyal Apple-buyer over the last couple of years. It's like a loyal friend you've known for all of these years who stabs you in the back.

I have stopped using iMessage/Facetime/iCloud already a few months ago so that the transition to my next phone will be more fluent.

Yes Apple, I'm not willing to take the risk again. Who knows what you still have in mind to betray us when launching your "unlocked" iPhone 6, 7 and so on.

From now on I'll play it safe and only buy completely unlocked smartphones, although I also bought the unlocked version of this iPhone5. Silly me.

I have the same problem in Poland. I bought iPhone 5 directly from Apple and paid instantly full price - however my SIM card is from Polkomtel (Plus) which at this time is the only LTE capable carrier i my country. Unfortunately it is also the only one that has no agreement with Apple, and because of that LTE feature, although technically 100% compatible, is disabled on my phone.

Its a great shame that people who paid full price directly to Apple are now penalize for not using the carrier that is not on "Apple's only right list". I will never understand this approach!

Yes they have, and if they don't allow it, they should at least be honest with their customers! The iPhone5 is sold as an 'unlocked' device, which basically means that Apple has no right to block any carrier. That is the law. But hey, I've been a loyal customer so far, but Apple's arrogance is growing bigger by the minute matter of speach... I don't like their attitude very much.

Dear Apple,

I'm an Apple evangelist in Belgium since the Mac SE30.

I convinced a lot of friends and firms to use Apple products, and supported them.

Today, I feel abandonned. Really.
Proximus, the main and best carrier in Belgium delivers LTE/4G.
But Proximus is not your partner. So you block 4G for the iPhone with Proximus. (but not for the iPad).
Why? Because Mobistar, your partner, is not yet ready wth 4G.

For the first time, I feel that business is far more important than user experience.

For the first time, I don't find reason's anymore to push Apple among my friends.

For the first time, I'm looking for more open solutions.

Well it's taking our friends in Cupertino a long time to open up their iPhone 5 for 'non-partner' networks and enable 4G. I thought this was absolutely legal, not maybe the smartest business practice in the long run, but a possible way of doing business...

Apparently some of you guys are right though and this practice does not seem to be legal within the EU and is now under investigation of the European Commission.

This last paragraph in the link says: 'There are signs that certain technical functions are disabled on certain Apple products in certain EU-member states. If this is confirmed, it probably shows a breach of EU antitrust laws.' according to The Financial Times.

Well we'll see what happens, my guess is before anything comes from it, the competitive market will probably make our favourite brand act sooner anyway...
