Change the order of deleting mails

I recently switched from Thunderbird to Mail as my email client, so I bring some habits or expectations from TB... and that means that I find Mail doesn't do what I would like it to do when I delete emails. Can I change this?

I go through emails in the list pane (left of message pain) and delete any I don't want (not all listed as spam). When I select an email then delete it, the automatic next selected email is the one in the list above the one I've deleted, but I prefer it to automatically select the one below that I've deleted, so I can easily then select a group if there's more than one to delete. So is there a way to change the way in which the auto-selection happens?

I list emails by date, most recent at the top.

Hoping for a nice easy way to do this, but can't see anything in Prefs to allow me to change it.

Thanks

There are no settings to change that. However, when you select a message and delete it, it will go to the one on top. If you then select a message below that selection, the order of deleting will reverse like you want. Once done, it should stay that way until you change the deletion order again.

Note that I'm doing this in ML. Not sure if the behavior is the same in Lion.
