Time Machine Stuck

I am backing up my macbook on a mypassport and my time machine is saying it is backing up 2.3 MB out of 89.1GB and has been doing this all night all day, although it has not moved and has continued to say the same thing. What should I do? What are the next steps I should take or should I leave it?
