I have a Mac Pro with Ati Radeon HD 5770 and just got the Apple 27" Cinema Display and one thing I can't find the answer to is - is the mini display port serving the high definition?

Yes. The 27" Thunderbolt display won't work with Mini DisplayPort but the 27" Mini DisplayPort version will.

Thanks Malcolm - I didn't buy Thunderbolt as I've heard it's not going to work with Mini DisplayPort - just wanted to clarify if Mini DisplayPort will serve the content in HD quality. That's good news - thanks again!
