iphone 3GS battery life.
I updated my 3GS to ios 6 and since then the battery life has been really poor, only lasting a couple of hours. Could this be due to the newer os. Do I need a new battery?

I had hugh problem with battery life when I updated to iOS 6.0 (only 3-4 hrs). With iOS 6.0.1. it can last for the whole day, at least! So I do not think there is a problem with your battery, it is the problem of the iOS.
