Q: 21" iMac attempts to start but shuts down

I have a 2010 21" iMac that shut down overnight. When I attempt to resart it, the system either dow nothing at all or runs for a few seconds and quits.

Am I dealing with a faulty hdd?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

To exclude a HardDrive issue, try to use an external Clean OS to boot (external HDD, USB stick a.s.o) If the computer is finishing the boot and after a while you see a message (Mac OS cannot repair Macintosh HD...) you need for sure a new Hard Drive
