My new mac mini with fusion drive says I only have 36 GB of storage

I have a new mac mini with the 1 TB fusion drive. When I look in storage in the About this Mac area, I'm told I have 6.67 GB free out of 34.62 GB. An Apple rep said that this is a bug in the system and that I have the proper amount of storage available. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

Hi there! Yes, I have experienced the exact same issue with my out of the box MacMini. I only have about 35 GB available, but the disc utility says I have a 1.2TB installed. Also I see that I have only 19GB available for extra storage. What did you do to remedy the problem? I tried running the disk permission repair tool, did not help anything at all!

After another long call w apple support, I spoke with a senior supervisor who said that the fusion drives were so new that even they were still learning about them. He took a lot of info from the computer and said he'd send it to the engineers. Hopefully, its just a matter of the computer reporting the actual storage info incorrectly.

He expected this could take up to a week, but he'd call in a couple of days to update me. I'll let you know what I find out.

Hey, I might have come up with a fix. First I used the disk utility tool to verify the HD Macintosh partition. Then I got a message to restart the computer and keep both command- and R-key in until the apple logo appeared, then release the keys. I was taken to the initial startup screen and was asked to pick the disk utility tool again. I then was asked to reinstall the start up disk image from the disk back up image. Following that, I restored from a backup I made on my Time Machine. I then noticed my disk volumes were restored to full 1.1TB availability! Give it a try, or otherwise I just got lucky?

I have exactly the same issue with mini out of the box. And senior advisor has no idea. I did some web browsing as I suspect you did. There are problems with the new Fusion Drive Technology, which must be known to Apple and are starting to surface.

Looks like a real issue but Apple is still in its denial mode. Must know about the problem if you were told it will take a week to address. Also difficult to believe that the support person and the senior advisor - despite several interruptions to checks things - were unaware of other complaints, at least of yours. As I am left in the dark I will return my Mac mini for credit, get back to windows before I load too much on that one. Also waiting to get a Nokia 920 to replace my [4th] iPhone, they have great Maps; and Surface to replace my iPad 2. Not out of anger, but to have a coherent ecosystem.

I have just gotten of the phone with Apple Support here in Canada, more to let them know about this issue and yes, got the same message. The Fusion drive is very new technology and they have not heard much about this problem either. Their best advice was to wait untill the new iMacs role out with the same drive and see if the same problem is cropping up elseware. Maybe a solutiion will be forthcomming at that time?

Seriously, I must say..... very disappointing Apple! Steve Jobs is probably rolling over in his grave. Since when does Apple role out a product that does not work 100% out of the box? Since when does Apple adopt a "wait and see" approach to possible hardware glitches? 😮 Where is the quality control people!! 😠

Even as a die-hard Macintosh fan, I must concede that Apple is loosing "street cred".

Well, I have my complaint logged and will be awaiting further updates regarding this issue, but I won't be holding my breath. 😐

got a call back, now told I may hear something on Monday. Why Monday? Because he expects an answer from the engineers. Why not to ask for an answer now? Because he can only ask them by email. Expectations seem to be that it doesn't matter if I cannot use my computer until Monday. I brought the advisor to cvwmd blog on a possible solution, but he did not want to comment on it, say the problem may come back.

By the way, cvdwmd, you thought (your blog yesterday) you had fixed the problem. Now you just got off the phone with Apple Support.. what happened, did the same probelm come back?

I can understand they were under pressure on Apple Maps as they had to get away from Google.. but what is the excuse here?

No, my fix still holds. I ran the Disk Utility again today, just to repair the disk permissions. I still have my full 1.2TB access. All I wanted to do with my phone call was to log my issue with Apple, so in the event things crash in the future, I have a reference that Apple was notified. I hope things will hold together until we know more about this issue.

To be fair, I haven't had an issue using my computer ... yet. I haven't done any heavy lifting, and I still have some free storage left. That amount does seem to be shrinking though; down to 4 GB free.

Maybe this is only a problem with a few fusion drives and they can just swap out my machine. I wish there were a way not to lose all my stuff on it though. I got it all set up the way I like.

cvdwmd anx pcmkservice:

Are you sure you fiexed the problem?

I did the same thing and Disk Utility now shows >1TB... However:

1/ when chosing the HDD from "Go" in the main menu and "Get Info", it still shows only 36GB

2/ worse: I tried to copy from an external hard disk a folder that would bring me just above 36GB and it cannot do it ("not enough space"); when I tried to do the same with a slightly smaller folder (that would bring me to 32GB)... it works.

Have you tried something similar and confirmed you have indeed access tomore than 36GB?

My new mac mini with fusion drive says I only have 36 GB of storage
