iPad Mini or iPad with Retina Display for my first tablet?

I am looking to buy an iPad for Christmas. This will be my first tablet and I am unsure on which one to choose.

It will be both for academic (University) and personal use.

I would like the 32gb celluar, but I am unsure on which model to go for and why.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
