How do you link an iOS device with a Mac Airbook via bluetooth

I cannot link my iPhone5 Keynote Remote with my 13" Mac Airbook Keynote presentation via bluetooth; however, they link without an issue via wifi. Sometimes I need to connect them for presentations when there is not an available wifi network. I am trying to set this up and test it at home, so I currently have wifi turned off on both devices. I have followed the provided procedure in keynote remote support with no success.
