My MacBook is stuck on a white screen at start up

I have a ~2 yr old 13" MacBook which had frozen on a black screen with the cursor showing and would not respond. After turning it off, I hear the statup tone and get a white screen and that's it. I,ve tried the different strat up techniques listed in the manual to no effect.
