why wont airplay generate a code?

For some reason, appleTV won't let me connect my macbook to the system, it keeps asking me to turn on home sharing in itunes, which I have done, but it won't marry up. I have downloaded the latest software etc and it won't generate an onscreen code in airplay either. Help!
