I haven't really used history in 4 months but I had to today, it can go back but when I open the history file I find nothing. When I go to safari in settings I can clear history, the words clear history are in black after I tap it it turns shady meaning I have erased the history file. Is it just me? What can I do to fix this?

Well, I am using an iPhone 4S with iOS 6.0.1 and when I open Safari and open bookmarks, then go to History, I see the history of what I have done since the last time I reset History. Not sure what could be causing your issue, however you might want to try a reset.This usually will help handle small issues with the iPhone. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release.
HI, probably you use a Private Browsing, unchecked the Private Browsing option (Settings - Safari - Private Browsing).
