some of my contacts on my iphone 4 do not show up in icloud

Most of my contact from my phone show up on icloud and also in Outlook 2010, but there are a few on my phone that just won't sync by using the cord through itunes or the wi-fi backup option. Suggestions?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

Everything works with icloud and outlook except when I enter a new contact on my phone, iIt will not push it up to icloud. But if I have a contact on my phone (that does show up on icloud) I can delete it so it is pushing some information from my phone up to the cloud. New contact entered in icloud or Outlook push down to my phone. I just can't enter a new contact on the phone and have it push up to the cloud. (As a result the 20 or so contacts that were originally on my phone wont sync up to icloud either).

Ok thought you were onto something there but unfortunately turning on and off still doesn't work. But, when I "merged" my contact is had a note that says that Exchange contacts would not be merged. So, what the heck is Exchange? Is it possible that I am setting up contacts in Exchange and that is why the ones I am missing are not showing up in icloud (not merging) and also why any of my new contacts setup on my phone won't push to icloud?

Exchange accounts are email accounts that also sync other data such as contacts and calendars (it's a reference to Microsoft Exchange), and is typically used by coporate IT departments, but you can also configure Gmail, Hotmail and other accounts as exchange accounts too. Here's an example of a gmail account set up as an exchange account, allowing you to sync Google contacts and calendars as well as gmail with your phone: http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740.

Contacts that are synced with an exchange server in this way will not be synced with iCloud. Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars and tap each of your email accounts to see if any of them are also syncing contacts.

The contact button in the Exchange screen is selected to "on". A while back, I was trying to sync my contacts with my gmail account but never was successful, thus the reason for the Exchange account and now my purchase of Office. I can't tell for sure but I would be around the same time that these contacts that are not syncing with icloud started to be entered. (the unsync'ed contacts are only the latest ones that I have been entering, approx 6 months worth). So how can I tell or see if these contacts are Exchange contacts? If I log onto my web gmail account there are no contacts listed there. If I turn the "contacts" button to off in Exchange on my phone it tells me that I will lose these contacts. Maybe that can't be helped and I'll have to re-enter them. Could this also be why new contacts are not going to icloud? (because they are going to exchange instead?) If I'm going to lose them, it would be nice to know which ones so that I can record them before I "flip the switch" on them...

I would have thought that looking at your Google contacts on their website would show any contacts that you are syncing with Google. Unless when you open your contacts and tap Groups that it shows a separate groupe for your exchange contacts that you could select I don't know how else you would be able to tell ahead of time which ones were your exchange contacts.

Something you could try is to do the following:

  1. Download and use the app My Contacts Backup to back up your contacts as an attachment to an email that you send to yourself.
  2. Confirm that you have the backup email from step 1 and that the attachment is present.
  3. Then go to your gmail exchange account and turn Contacts to Off. If you lose any contacts they will hopefully be contained in the backup you made at step 1.
  4. Examine your contacts to see if any are missing. If there are, use the My Contacts Backup app to delete all your contacts by tapping the actions (gear shaped) icon at the bottom right, scrolling to the bottom and tapping Remove All Contacts.
  5. Then re-import your original contacts by opening the email you sent at step 1 and tapping on the attchment. This should import all your contacts back to your phone, hopefully including the contacts removed when you turned off your exchange contacts.

Ok tried that. After I turned contacts off in Exchange, all of the contacts that would not push to icloud were gone. It then gave me the option to delete my Exchange account. As far as I know, I don't use Exchange for anything. Should/can I delete it? I temporarly re-installed my contacts, and have recorded the contacts that "disappear" that are obvioiusly associated with Exchange somehow. Fortunately, I only need to enter about 25 that will dissappear if I remove Exchange. After that I can then see if adding a new contact on the phone will push up to icload. Try delete Exchange?

Yes, if you don't need exchange, delete the account. If you still need to use gmail, just re-add the account using the default Gmail option in Settings>Mail,Contacts>Calendars>Add Account. This will add it as an IMAP account which will not effect your contacts. When you're done, you can turn Contacts back to On in Settings>iCloud, and if prompted, choose Merge. This will merge your iPhone contacts with any that are alread in your iCloud account.

Finally, after deleting Exchange uploading my contacts to icloud is working. For some reason even the contacts that weren't showing up on icloud before now due but i think that is due to running the backup app. Unfortunately, most of my contacts got duplicated with that app. and I know there are ways to delete them through sync but I think I'll just click them to get rid of them. Easy enough on the computer to do so. Thanks for your help. One last question. Now that this is up and running (icloud to Outlook) this really replaces my backup function on itunes? Do I ever need to change my backup function in itunes off from "backup to icloud" to "backup to computer". Where are my song's being backup too?

You're welcome. Also, if you don't want to delete all the duplicates manually, there My Contacts Backup Pro version of the app will locate and delete duplicates for you if you want to use it. If you go this route, just delete the free version as you won't need both.

Even though you may be backing up to iCloud I recommend that you still do occasional manual backups on your computer using iTunes by right-clicking on the name of your phone and selecting Back Up (I do this at least weekly). This way you will always have a second backup in case the iCloud backup ever fails (which they unfortunately have been known to do). It also allows you to include the backup in your computer backup, assuming you're using Time Machine.

Music is not included in the iPhone backup. Music purchased from the iTunes store is available for redownloading for free should you ever need to (assuming the songs are still available), but music from other sources is not. It should all be in your iTunes library, and it's a good practice to include it in your computer backup.

Same here. I am trying to back up and sync my girlfirend's iPhone after she lost some of her contacts. I synced it using iTunes, but there are definitely some contacts on the phone which don't appear on my iMac in the Address Book. "Help" is no help.

Why isn't everything syncing? Because of this, I don't trust it not to lose contacts, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way of doing this manually, or any specific settings to ensure the automatic sync is done completely.
