Select what you want to cut

Command X

Click where you want to paste (or select what you want to replace)

Command V

The command key is the one with the Apple symbol.

If you prefer you can use the File Menu instead of Command X and V.

In Mac OS X,Cut (Cmd+X) and Paste (Cmd+V) only works for Text but not for cutting and parting Files and Folders!!

To move Files and Folders by Cutting & Pasting, first do Cmd+C to copy the item from the source place & later,go to the destination folder and do Cmd+Opt+V...which pastes the item to the desstination, cutting from the previous location!!

the first one seems to be wrong. so this is the corrected one. sorry for the inconvenience.
