iCloud backup message won't go away and is making iPad unusable. How do I make it go away?

The message "this iPad hasn't been backed up in 2 weeks. Backups happen when this iPad is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi." I did all these things but that message still won't go away. What should I do? I can't use my iPad at all.

iPad 2, iOS 5.1.1

Hold both of the power buttons until the screen goes black and then turn it on.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! now i can use my iphone! i was so annoyed that i couldn't use it until the stupid message went away. tried to turn off the power but of course you can't slide the power off either, just like you can't slide to unlock your phone to get rid of the message. so many thanks (: i don't know why i didn't think of this strategy
