How do I set up my email account on the new windows 8 mail system. I can receive emails (using imap.mail.me.com) but cannot send
any emails. I tried using (smtp.mail.me.com) with port 587 but this doesn't work.. need help..

I have exactly the same problem. Have you found an answer by now? I haven't.
Wouldn't you know it. I found the answer (at least for my smtp errors) right after leaving my first reply. It is at the following URL:

Change ssl by tsl in outgoing server Configuration and ready
SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
SSL Required: Yes
Port: 587
SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
Username: example@me.com (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
Password: Your iCloud password
Note: If you receive errors using SSL, try using TLS instead.
