When imported from Iphoto, my videos appear "squashed", like they've been stretched to fit a wide screen. How can I avoid/change this? Thank you

Try the cropping tool, and check if the aspect ratio of your project is correct. Select the clip and press C. By guess is you have the cropper set to Crop and Disallow Black, and that you have a 4:3 movie in a 16:9 project. You probably want to fix the aspect ratio or click Fix in the cropper. I believe that's it, but you gave few details.

Thanks, I tried that. What I've learned in the meantime is that I'll need to take videos on my phone horizontally rather than vertically. Apparently this eliminates the problem.

Yes, horiznotal. But you can use the cropper to rotate your movie in 90-degree increments. But I guess you already did that?
