Podcast App audio stops working in middle of podcast

I am having a problem where, for certain episodes of a podcast, the audio on my iPhone 4S stops working in the middle of the podcast. The audio works fine when listening in iTunes to the same episode, or when opening the native file in QuickTime. I thought it might be a format incompatibility but it appears the audio format is not one that others have indicated creates problems. And that it stops in the middle of the episode, not all the way through, makes me think something else is going on.

I've rebooted the phone, deleted and reinstalled the Podcast app, deleted and reinstalled the episode, all with no success. One of the specific episodes I'm having trouble with is the Fastpitch Softball TV Show - Episode 173 (Laura Berg interview). iPhone 4S, iOS 6.0.1, Podcast 1.1.2.

Update --

I tried this on my iPad3, no problem there with iOS 6.0.1 and Podcast 1.1.2. Then I discovered that I don't have the problem when I plug headphones into my iPhone 4S -- only when using the speaker. This happens with other podcasts as well but from the same author.
