So here is the problem.

I bought a used iphone

The seller kept some paid apps on it as an added bonus to my purchase (very nice of him)

He told me I wouldn't be able to update those apps but anything I installed would update fine

So he has been completely logged out in every way and my itunes is logged in

It works when I download free apps or purchase paid apps, it asks for MY itunes info

HOWEVER when I go to update apps, even the ones I downloaded with my itunes ID and password, it asks for HIS itunes ID and password

***?

I would reset to factory settings but before I realized this problem existed,

I spent hours on hours the first two days of owning the phone customizing it to my liking, downloading tons of apps (including ones I paid for!), and adding my contacts and music. I really don't want to lose all of this.

How can I change it so that it updates with my info?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

    Also illegal.

    Settings>General>Resets>Erase All Content and Settings.

Set it up as a new device for yourself. You have no legal right to the 'paid apps' that the seller left on the phone and the seller has no right to transfer them to you.

Change iTunes Store account  on an iOS device -  Log out of your current account with Settings.app > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6)  > tap on your AppleID. Log in with a different account. Note, turning on automatic downloads or re-download past purchases may tie the device to that account for 90 days - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627

You have to purge his apps. It's his property. All apps are signed after downloading to the user id.

You can't update the apps without his authorization.

Well I had no idea this was illegal. I would have just reset it to factory setting when I first bought it if I had known it was and if I had known I would have this issue

but now I also have apps that I myself paid for that I don't want to lose

do you know anything I can do?

I have already deleted all of his apps and all the remains are ones I got on my own using my itunes ID but it still asks for his info when updating

You can re-download apps that you purchased with your Apple ID without having to pay for them again.
