i have the i pad pluged into my laptop but its not saying anything. please may someone help me

Did you open iTunes? Then click on the name of your iPad in the left pane, and click Check for Updates. The latest update for the 1st generation iPad is iOS 5.1.1.
sorry im extreemly dim wen it comes to this, ive opend itunes but cant findthe name of my ipad or any ipad names 😟 wen i open itunes do i go on music, films, tv programs, podcast, i tunes u, downloads?
stevesjobsfan0123 meant iTunes on your computer. Connect the iPad to your computer via the supplied cable and it should appear on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes under 'Devices' - select it and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which is Summary. Select that tab and there should be a Check For Updates button on it
Before starting the update process first copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Yes, under a section called LIBRARY, you should see Music, Movies, etc., like you said, and then below that, a section called STORE that has iTunes Store, iTunes Match, etc... Then below that, if your iPad is plugged in, there should be a DEVICES section.

If the apps and the iTunes purchased music aren't on your computer's iTunes then you should be able to copy them from the phone to it via File > Transfer Purchases (that won't copy music bought from other sites and/or copied from CDs). You can then sync them to your iPad.

You may not be able to copy all of your iPhone apps to the iPad e.g. some apps are iPhone-only as they require full phone capability.
