WHITE CIRCLE WITH LINE THROUGH SAFARI - CAN'T ACCESS INTERNET

Don't know what to do. There was an update to safari6 and decided to download it. Now there is a white circle with a line through it in front of the safari app. When I go to open it says I have an earlier version and app requires 10.7 or later. I now am trying to delete the upgrade, but have no idea how to do it. I cannot access the internet at all. I had Safari 5.1.7. I don't know how to uninstall it or get the old version of Safari back??? PLEASE HELP. Thank you.

I hope you find an answer soon, as I am having a similar problem. I had to download Firefox on another computer and copy it over on a USB thumb drive just to be able to access the internet from the laptop I was working on. I want to delete the "newer" Safari I tried to install in favor of an older version that is compatible with Lion, but it refuses to let me pull the app to the trash and says that OSX needs it. Does me no good if I can't actually USE that version of Safari, however!
