Are the me.com and mac.com email addresses going away??

I got the email telling me that an iCloud address has been reserved. What the email doesn't tell me is whether the me.com and mac.com domains are going away. mac.com and me.com are kind of cool. iCloud.com is definitely not cool. Reminds me of Apple's iTools.

Do I need to sign up for the iCloud address because the mac.com is going away? If not, will there eventually be features that only work on the icloud.com addresses? Otherwise, why switch?

No one knows if they are going away. All indications are that they are not. You just have the ability to use the cool / not cool address as you deem appropriate.

From iCloud: Using your @icloud.com email address:

Note: No matter which address you choose to send email from, you will continue to receive all email sent to your @me.com, @mac.com, or @icloud.com email addresses directly in your iCloud inbox.
