Mac Mini (2012) HDMI losing sync (blank screen/snow)

Looks like my mini has the HDMI issue that others have reported on the macrumors forums as well as here.

Mine exhibits the blank screen/snow issue ONLY when the HDMI port is used. This happens with HDMI->DVI adapter and also with pure HDMI cabling.

With the same screen, mini and DVI cable this does not occur.

This is a fresh Mini 2012 Server i7 model.

Do I need to report this in an official capacity somewhere (this is only the second ever apple hardware fault I've encountered in twenty years). Should I just be patient for a possible fix (as I don't need the hdmi port

bobmepp,

You probably are correct regarding the HD4000 chips, but clearly there is an unacceptably large sample of bad ones as it is not only Mac users who are complaining. You will also find many complaints of problems on the Intel Support pages. Apple has released a firmware update to address this problem, which leads me to believe it is not a small number of users who are complaining. Unfortunately that didn't seem to fix anyone's problem. On the Mini the problem does appear to be limited to the HDMI output, although I doubt it is as simple as a cable issue. I've not heard anyone complain about problems with the thunderbolt output, and I doubt an Apple store would use anything less than their thunderbolt display as a demo. So far I have not read anyone saying Apple replaced their Mini or the logic board. Finally, I've heard no complaints from MacBook users that have the HD4000 graphics chip, but they are not using HDMI out. As I've said in previous posts, I'm waiting for the new Mini to come out this fall with the new HD5000 and will be watching closely for complaints, but until then will continue to use my 2010 Mini that has been trouble free except for the optical drive that died about the time I received the 2012 Mini that I returned the end of last year. I ordered a new optical drive from China ($50), which I replaced myself and it is working great.

thanx for the info mate.

My monitor (a 19" AOC) is dual input : VGA and DVI-D.

I used so far a DVI-D to HDMI connected on the mac mini.

Yesterday I used a DVI-D to DVI-D, that came with my monitor, with the mac mini's HDMI to DVI-D, I had zero issues with the display.

Well, the DVI-D to HDMI cable that I was used was something generic.

The original DVI-D cable that came with the AOC has ferrite rings on both connectors.

I also set the monitor to have the DVI-D input as default (not AUTO mode between VGA / DVI-D)

thx

And a bronze ring round your left ankle?

Seriously, though: I know ferrite (or powered iron) rings used to be used to reduce radio interference. But are ferrite rings actually incorporated in some monitor cables? How can one tell? Some USB cables have cylinders about 1 cm in diameter and 3 cm long near one end. Do these contain ferrite? I have always assument that they are purely decorative. But I have never seen anything comparable on a monitor cable. I should be very grateful for elucidation.

Aug 27, 2013 6:47 AM in response to theo2ro

I can't afford silver rings. I've spent too much money on cables and adaptors.😢

But it's still not clear to me: are those cylinders ferrite rings or are they just decorative?

In my case, as a matter of fact (as I said in earlier posts), I am currently not having the black screen problem at all any more. But in the maze of possible causes for the problem — graphics card, RAM, cables, adapters — all I can say is that removing a couple of old screensavers from my system and replacing the monitor's HDMI cable and Apple DVI-D adapter with a quite cheap DisplayPort to mini DisplayPort cable — without cylinders, ferrite or plastic — seems to have cured the problem. I'm not superstitious. I don't believe in ankle rings of any composition. But I'm touching wood!

Sep 3, 2013 3:35 PM in response to theo2ro

Help! As I said in earlier posts, I seemed to have solved the black screen problem by changing from HDMI to DisplyPort cable and deleting two old screen-savers. Suddenly I am in serious trouble. I should be very grateful if other contributors to this string could tell me whether what I have now observed is the black-screen phenomenon that the posts have been about, or whether my computer is now suffering from something else.

1. A few days ago the computer would not start up properly. It kept bleeping, the white pilot light blinked, the screen went black but with a lot of incomprehensible white text. I had to turn the computer off with its start-up button. I waited, then restarted. A similar situation occurred, but without the white text. The third time I tried, it started normally.

2. Today, while I was doing something quite simple with Bento, the screen suddenly went black and the computer bleeped rhythmically again. After I had switched it off by the start-up button, a crash report appeared. I tried to copy it, but in my panic must have not pressed a key properly, because I have not got it.

3. A few minutes later, however, while I was writing an e-mail in SeaMonkey, everything crashed again — but left me with a white screen this time. This time I was able to copy the subsequent crash report. Here it is:

I should be immensely grateful to be told whether these disasters are the ones this string is about (in which case I shall eventually have to sell the computer and buy the 2013 version) or whether they are a different phenomenon, in which case I might be able to get the computer repaired under guarantee.

Sep 3, 2013 4:47 PM in response to Chris Syntichakis

Thanks for this, Chris Syntichakis. I shall have to try uninstalling everything connected with Soundflower. But why would this small application, which is no more than a switch that allows a sound source like a browser to be connected to a sound recording application like Audacity in order to allow recording of an audio stream from the internet, cause such trouble? I shall be sorry to lose Soundflower, which, as a musician and lecturer in music, I find very useful on occasion. I have, in fact, not used Soundflower for at least a week.

So you think this is not the black screen fault about which there has been such massive posting in this discussion?

Sep 3, 2013 5:14 PM in response to Michael Graubart

PS: I have just looked at the Soundflower forum, and it is full of stories about computer crashes.and panics. I shall uninstall Soundflower, but the curious thing is that I have had Soundflower (and occasionally used it) for a few weeks, and the crashes have only just started. Still, i shall try.

Thank you again very much indeed, Chris Syntichakis, for putting me onto the trail.

Sep 5, 2013 3:10 AM in response to Michael Graubart

Following from above, this morning, shortly after I had started my computer and was looking up some websites, my screen went black. Pressed and held start button: computer went into bleeping mode. Tried several times, eventually started and showed a white screen with the following message in white text on a black band at the top of the screen:

Panic(cpu 3 caller 0xffffff00040b8655): Kernel trap at 0xffffff0004087ca3, type 14=page faul regist rs:

Restarted yet again; this time OK. No large error report (as before) appeared.

There seem to be 2 possible explanations:

This seems not to be the 'black screen' problem documented in hundreds of posts here. It is a CPU problem.

Though I uninstalled Soundflower completely yesterday, it may have affected my system permanently. There is some evidence of this happening to other people who have installed and uninstalled Soundflower. Please see

http://code.google.com/p/soundflower/issues/detail?can=2&start=0&num=100&q=&cols pec=ID%20Type%20Status%20Priority%20Milestone%20Owner%20Summary&groupby=&sort=&i d=113

Please can someone tell me what to do? Should I reinstall my whole operaying system (10.8.4)? Can I obtain a fresh one from the Apple Store? Is installing it straightforward?

Thank you in anticipation.
