Mac Mini (2012) HDMI losing sync (blank screen/snow)

Looks like my mini has the HDMI issue that others have reported on the macrumors forums as well as here.

Mine exhibits the blank screen/snow issue ONLY when the HDMI port is used. This happens with HDMI->DVI adapter and also with pure HDMI cabling.

With the same screen, mini and DVI cable this does not occur.

This is a fresh Mini 2012 Server i7 model.

Do I need to report this in an official capacity somewhere (this is only the second ever apple hardware fault I've encountered in twenty years). Should I just be patient for a possible fix (as I don't need the hdmi port

Your right mate, its a third party!

I will continue to use the monitor's DVI with the Apple's HDMI-DVI.

On second thought, my problem with "snow" started when I tried to watch a video from BBC iplayer..

I noticed that on this topic there is a reference about "snow" , in my case I had a full screen "snow" like

I was on a old TV set and I lost the signal (ie. no display of the desktop) , is this symptom related to the HD4000 problems , or just an issue with the flash player...?

thx

I haven't got an Apple cable as such, Chris. What came with my Mac mini was just an adapter, consisting of about 7 cm of quite slim white cable with an HDMI female plug at one end and a male DVI plug at the other. I cannot see a manufacturer's name on it. With my Dell monitor, there came a black cable with HDMI plugs at each end and also ferrite rings at both ends. I am now using that cable and the adapter described above.

I tremble to say it, but I have now not had a crash of any kind for 6 days. But as I said before, six days ago I also wiggled the RAM around a bit in case it had been slightly dislodged, so the absence of crashes could be due to that action and not the cable.

The cable I was using when I was getting the crashes is a rather thinner black cable by StarTech.com with a DisplayPort plug at one end and a Mini DisplayPort plug at the other and no ferrite rings. I obtained it from Amazon UK, but presumably one can get it from StarTech.com. But again, that may not have been the cause of the crashes. They could have been caused by poor seating of the RAM.

Best of luck, Chris — and everyone else.

Yea, I have the same cable, HDMI to DVI-D that came with the mini. Its strange that my problem usually occurs after an uptime of 10hrs (the system goes to sleep mode from time to time). I had a nice chat with the Apple support today, they were trying to convince me that the problem was with my monitor (2x laptops and 2x other Intel PCs work fine with this), thanks to them I just canceled the Applecare package (that I got shortly after purchased my Mac mini), seems to be a total waste of money. I was ready to visit the local Apple store for support, but the only option was to book an appointment for ... next week! Ridiculous…

Sep 12, 2013 11:51 AM in response to Chris Syntichakis

I hadn't had my mini on continuously for as long as 10 hours until yesterday, when, coincidentally, I went out to a conference and left the mini on by mistake. It was still working normally when I got home. But one swallow doesn't make a summer, as the saying goes.

If yours tends to develop its problem after 10 hours or so, that suggests a rather conventional old-fashioned electronic fault, such as a resistor or electrolytic capacitor, or its equivalent within a chip, overheating. But I go back to the days of separate components (and even, before that, to the valves — tubes in the USA — that preceded transistors), so I am not sure whether the chips in today's integrated circuits can behave like that. Worth considering and talking to Apple about, perhaps?

Sep 12, 2013 12:14 PM in response to Michael Graubart

The issue its not exactly after 10hs, yesterday, yes I noticed a couple of black screens (just a couple of secs each) that happened after a total uptime of 11hrs (as I wrote, the mac is not running all the time, from time to time I put the machine to sleep mode) , two days ago the issue happened on less than 2hrs of uptime..

as of overheat.. The temp is on average 42c (info from SMCFancontrol app)

Sep 12, 2013 12:30 PM in response to Chris Syntichakis

Oh, I didn't mean exactly after 10 hours. I just meant that components (and that may include the semiconductive junctions within chips) can heat up after a period of continuous running. And also I meant that this would occur if the component (or the junction) is slightly faulty. So it may not be a question of the published range of safe ambient temperatures for the whole machine, but of a slightly dodgy individual electronic component (other than the graphics card that everyone has been moaning about, perhaps, and therefore perhaps more easily replaced).

Help! Nearly three weeks without a problem — and four panics since last night! I have not installed anything that seems a likely culprit; an update for my Epson printer software, that's all, I think.

The panics have happened while, or just after, starting up. I attach the latest crash report. The only thing I can see on it that I recognize is 'CopyPaste Pro', which I have been using for years on my old computer nand on this Mac mini. If anyone can suggest a reason, I should be very grateful.

Please could someone tell me whether the notorious 'black screen' problem attributed to the Intel graphics card or to display cables shows up in subsequent internal reports as a 'panic' or not? I have already asked here at least twice.

I have to know. After 18 trouble-free days, my Mac mini is suddenly now suffering a panic once or twice a day. If these panics are the 'black screen' events, I shall know that there is nothing I can do until the 2013 model of the mini appears. If they are due to something else, I can ask Apple to have a look at my computer.

Here is the report on the latest panic:
