I've got the same problem with my mac mini i7 2.3 : sometimes i have a black screen and snow screen after.

One more time Apple send us products with native problems...

I have the same problem, purchased Nov 2012, mac mini (slower model) with or without the DVI adaptor.

Possibly helpful notes about our experiences with this issue(no fix yet):

    • Except without the adaptor it streached the image once, we had to unplug and replug the screen for it to go away.  The user didn't try simply turning the screen off and back on though.
    • It does seem to do it less when we use direct HDMI instead of the HDMI to DVI adaptor+dvi cable combination.
    • We have an intel 256GB SSD, we tried turning off screen savers and power saving options with no luck.
    • We experience the problem at random while working or while the machine is idle.
    • We cannot get the problem to repeat by performing any specific action.
    • Currently the problem is occuring around once a day or just under.

yesterday I bought a mini display port to HDMI adapter. I plugged into the thunderbolt port and so far no display issues.

I still hope Apple will resolve this issue as I do want the thunderbolt port free for devices.

New Mac Mini i7 delivered yesterday. Same issue. HDMI connect with/without supplied adapter looks terrible on monitor.  3x snow or blank display and blanks out.

what is the cable part no that is working?

freaking apple....this was replacing an imac 24" that is less than 4 years old that had a manufacturer heat problem. I am ******.

So for the only better solution found by many users to use a thunderbolt to hdmi adapter. I haven't tried that yet, instead I bought a thunderbolt display itself. My problem is solved in an expensive way. Though I am happy because I got the best display and also I can use other thunderbolt accessories, additional 2 USB 2.0 ports etc. Though this will ruin the purpose of buying Mac mini for many users.

Wow, having read this thread, I feel "lucky" that I only suffer the fuzzy text issue on my new Mac Mini (interestingly, seems the same via HDMI and Thunderbolt, although others have reported more success via the latter - will be trying again myself when I get home).

Very disappointing first Mac experience for me so far!

I have the same problem. Had the 2012 Mac Mini for 1 week and the signal has been dropping out on the HDMI every 1 - 2 hours. Had it linked through my amp which showed complete loss of signal (sound and video) when the screen when off, used it on an LCD TV and projector. Same problem. Changed the HDMI cable and still no joy.

I've been on the phone to Apple support and they said they've not heard of this before and suggested that I reinstalled the OS to ensure the driver is running ok. I can't see this is likely as if the driver wasn't working, it wouldn't show anything and I'm not spending 6 hours setting it up again only to be dissapointed.

They've booked me an appointment to the Genius Bar but I feel they are going to talk around potential issues, offer to check it over which means some poor bugger has to watch it for 2 hours and wait for a 1 second blip and if they don't then it's fine.

Very awkward this. If anyone finds a fix, I'm all ears

I'll let you know if the Genius' find a solution

One suggestion I've seen in a few places is to use the Mini DisplayPort output of the Mac Mini with a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (and then with a HDMI cable)... but I can't say I've seen anyone saying "Yep, been running it for a few days and it has fixed it" yet.  ncalliari was going to report back in this thread but hasn't yet .

Has anyone suffering from the HDMI output issues tried a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter?  Did it fix your issues?  And does the Mac Mini do audio output in its Mini DisplayPort, or would USB/Toslink be needed?

Apple stores sell a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter for $34.95, so for anyone going to a Genius bar about the HDMI issue it might be worth trying to get them to give you one!

the point is that we are unable to use a dual monitor. The thunderbolt works fine, but if someone, like me, uses 2 lcds to split his job you'll understand it's impossible to work because one of the 2 screens becomes black like in standby mode

  • Robert Hoffman Level 1 (30 points)

I am using for 2 days now & no issues. I got the adapter at Micro Center for $10.00.

I also have the random black screens issue on my 2012 Mini 2.6Ghz, Fusion Drive, 4GB. Currenly using HDMI output to Samsung P2770HD via the Apple HDMI to DVI adaptor.

Is there any more official way for me to report this?

  • cactuspilot Level 1 (0 points)

Got a link for the adapter...anyone?

I see one on the apple store that has terrible reviews

  • Westyfield2 Level 1 (5 points)

Oh I agree Ciccilleju, using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter is a bodge and will lose dual monitor... but at least it gets you one non-blanking display :).

That's good to hear Robert Hoffman, was it any particular brand?  And does it do audio?

@cactuspilot, a quick search on google found me a Neet one, a Startech one, a iWires one, and a Kanex one (iAdapt V2).

Brand is inland.....check I paid $9.9 plus tax. So far it has been working & no issues(keeping my fingers X'd).
