Q: Mac Mini (2012) HDMI losing sync (blank screen/snow)

Looks like my mini has the HDMI issue that others have reported on the macrumors forums as well as here.

Mine exhibits the blank screen/snow issue ONLY when the HDMI port is used.  This happens with HDMI->DVI adapter and also with pure HDMI cabling.

With the same screen, mini and DVI cable this does not occur.

This is a fresh Mini 2012 Server i7 model.

Do I need to report this in an official capacity somewhere (this is only the second ever apple hardware fault I've encountered in twenty years).  Should I just be patient for a possible fix (as I don't need the hdmi port

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 2012 Server i7 2.3GHz, SSD+HDD 16GB

just to be clear once and for all: the issue is related to HDMI port and NOT to Thunderbolt one. You CAN connect ANY kind of adapter to the Thunderbolt port and it will just work fine.

About the HDMI port: you can connect any kind of adapter and it will NOT work fine, anytime, anywhere, anyhow

I have just spoken to a senior 'Apple care' representative who has confirmed Apple are fully aawre of the issues relating to the mac mini screen blackouts/snow. He also advised that the team in the 'USA' are working hard to rectify the issues, although at this stage I was not told whether this related to hardware or software. I was advised a software update (10.8.2) was released recently and if the issues can be resolved with an update this will be rolled out, although if the motherboard is at fault this would need to be replaced. Now I have made a contact I will be emailing for updates in the coming weeks and report back on here with any progress to the issue(s).

When I asked about why Apple had not issued a statement, I was just told that he could not comment on Apple policy on the release of statements with this issue.  At least we now know they are fully aware of the problem...

Thanks for the update gooch99.  Something positive(ish) at last.  I did not want to submit my machine to board changes etc. until I was confident that Apple had found the problem.  I look forward to your updates.

lol, it's incredible how things could be different from country to country: Apple Italy told me that they have no idea and no reports about these issues

    who's telling the truth?

i never been so disapointed before...

In the UK it came as a surprise both to AppleCare and my Apple store. I don't think that Apple are even communicating internally, let alone to customers who have parted with hard-earned cash for their product.

There has been no noticeable response from Apple to the various threads on this site.

Apple Mexico (I only made one call)

    - Not aware of the problem

    - No idea

    - they give me a case number

    - Take the mini to an apple center (In progress)

    *sigh*

I waited, then I crossed my fingers, and ordered.

2.6Ghz with 16GB of Crucial brand RAM, 1TB HD.

Received mini on 11/20, then this morning (11/21) at about 9AM I had my first issue - black, then snow, then normal, over about 3 seconds. No intervention on my part, but I'm worried about it worsening.

Connected by HDMI to HDMI on my Vizio TV.

I can say that the colors are perfectly fine.

I'll give it some more time and then try the MDP to HDMI adapter, but I didn't purchase this to give up the only Thunderbolt port for video out.

Do not expect Apple to admit, officially, there is an issue. Even if support people have hear of it, they likely cannot confirm it either. As a company, they may admit the issue when/if they have a fix, but not before. That's pretty standard for most companies.

On the bright side - Apple's holiday return policy is in effect, so most of us with these minis don't have to return them until January 7, 2013. Confirm this yourself to make sure you are included (based on purchase date) and that I have the return date. I'm willing to give Apple until then to fix it.
