How do I use bluetooth to search for other devices? (how to make my phone discoverable?)

I've been trying to use bluetooth from my iphone4s to search for other devices (iphone, ipad..) but unable to do so, I turned bluetooth ON but it kept on searching and nothing happened. Please help!

You cannot connect the iPhone to other devices like that. This is the list of supported bluetooth profiles, and file transfer is not one of them. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3647
