I have just updated to 10.8.2 from Appstore and now I cannot use my external monitor. Just get a screen with a cursor on it on both the Macbook Pro (retina) and the monitor.
Unplugging monito allows the Macnook to work ok.
Help please.....
Can I go back to Mountain Lion version before the 10.8.2 update as the external monitor is useless.
You should be able to get the external monitor to work with 10.8.2 - I don't have a Retina display model, but rather a late 2011 and I'm connected to my external Apple Thunderbolt Display using the TB port. How are you connecting to your external monitor and what does Displays (under System Preferences) show?

My external monitor has been working perfectly for weeks. Tonight I updated my Operating system as requested by Apple Software Update to 10.8.2. It now no longer works.Just get a black screen with cursor on both MBPro and Monitor. Unplugging it allows the MBPr to work fine.
Am using DVI with BenQ monitor.
Further Update:
When I close the lid the monitor works, open lid and all screens are black with large cursor. This is definitely a buggy update.
Also System Preferences does not show the monitor even though it is working with MBPr lid down.
PS Why did it say I can edit the above message but now there is no edit button?
You only get a limited time to edit!
You're certainly having some buggy behavior... did you also use the 10.8.2 Supplemental Update - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1600? I don't know if that will 'fix' the problem, but it's worth a try...

Can you explain what you meant by "total reset"? I just bought a brand new Macbook Air running 10.8.2 (with supplemental update 2) and I can't detect my external display through the mini-display to dvi adapter.
I've obviously rebooted several times to no avail. Please help.
