should the new iphone headphones work with iphone 4?

Should the new iphone headphones work with iphone 4?

Just bought a pair and the left one works in iPhone 4 and Shuffle, I see that there are more connections on the jack but I guess / hope this is due to the microphone.

I'm sure my headphones I had with my iPad 3 worked both sides with the microphone.

Gutted as I wear these cyling and i'm fed up with them blowing out in the wind. (Last ones got wrapped around back wheel sadly these were my best pair with the microphone :-(.

Can anyone help here?

Hoping they are faulty.
