Can you text using traditional phone keypad (3x4) instead of QWERTY?

I've been waiting for the iPhone to finally have the option of texting using a tradtional 3x4 keypad like all the the other Android and Windows phones offers. This has been the one thing keeping me from going iPhone. Anyone know if the iPhone 5 has implemented this?

The ability to use the phone's numeric keypad for texting is not available in the iPhone. You can supply feedback to Apple here www.apple.com/feedback. Not judging you, but I find it interesting why someone would want to press a key numerous times for a letter rather than a single tap on a keyboard.

Well, you did not mention T9 to start with, you just said to use the numeric keypad. If you do a search here regarding T9, you will find numerous discussions about it, including mixed reviews and desires for and against it. You may leave feedback for Apple if you are interested in a feature at www.apple.com/feedback. They do not answer those feedback messages, and no one would know if they intend to implement it as a feature unless they announce it. From what I have read in the past, I don't see it happening.

If you read back into this thread, which by the way is almost 2 years old, you will see that T9 is actually old technology. I don't believe Apple will implement this. It is possible they might allow an app at some point to have access to the required APIs to use it, since it seems it has been set up for Chinese users. If you do a search on the net, you can see this. By as stated earlier in the thread, you can leave feedback for Apple.

You don't press a key numerous times. It's called T9, and along with iTap I can type messages with one thumb faster than anyone can on QWERTY. Let's face it, for most non-teenagers, texting is a 1-handed activity. Most people like myself who carry a briefcase in one hand or text while walking do not have two hands available to type messages. Why Apple has not picked up on the need for a better 1-handed text input like the 3x4 with T9 is a mystery to me, because all the other phone manufacturers have. And Apple will continue to lose my business over this silly omission until they decide to implement the option which, you'd have to think, would be one of the easiest, simplest additions imaginaeble.

While I am very sorry you had to go through that (sounds painful), I hope you're not implying that 1-handed texting with QWERTY is anywhere near as fast/accurate as 1-handed texting using 3x4 keypad w/ iTap.

I'm implying no such thing, especially since I'm not in a texting race or contest.

My reply was in response to this.

Texting with the iPhone does not require two hands.
