How Do I Resolve Constant Kernal Panics?

I need help troubleshooting what is going on with my iMac.

We've been getting sporatic KPs since about Oct. 22. We have not been able to use our computer since yesterday, because looking at it the wrong way causes the black screen of death. I've looked at the reports, and I cannot tell if it is software or if there is some hardware hookup that is causing the issue. We installed Microsoft Office in September. We have several devices that we hook up (all of them are unplugged, now) - our camera, iPod, and Kindle - all of which we have had for a while. We have a backup HD that we use with Time Machine, that also has been a part of our set up for over two years. The one thing I discovered today, is that the software had not been updated to 10.7. Thinking that may be the cause, I rebooted in safe mode, downloaded the software and then restarted. I got the message that the update could not be expanded and the download may be corrupted. Add to all this: I had to restore my iTunes library from the Time Machine twice in the last two months. There is a lot going on here. I'm not looking for any magic solutions (although that would be nice), just maybe a few more things I should do and/or look at before resigning myself to spend the dough on computer repair (hate to do that if its not a hardware issue).

The first KP runs like this:

Thanks! I did some searches before, but your post puts everything in one spot for me.

I am reading a lot of frustration out there in Apple land since the two most recent OS upgrades. I hope Apple is listening. I originally purchased a Mac thinking it would be relatively trouble free and fun to use. OS Lion quite literally brought reality crashing in with all the crashing it has done. After Apple had set some very high standards with the quality of its products, this is a real let down.

Sorry, I am venting some of my frustration. I've been at this for hours and already have done tons of reading. This is so much trouble to go through, and its not like we do anything exotic with our family computer. We are not gamers, and we have not added anything to our system. We have this wonderful computer that we all use for entertainment, education and managing our lives... and now it is pretty useless.

Anyway, I am grateful for this forum as one option before I have to spend more money on my Mac product.

Thanks, again.

I am trying the hardware test now.

I would be really surprised if it is a hardware issue. I'm convinced OS Lion is the root of all the crashes.

Our system seemed to do just fine before we upgraded over the summer. We do not have a lot of third party software or peripherals aside from a few necessities.

Still venting over what I think is a real plunge in quality with Mac OS.

We'll see what happens after I wrestle with this for a while.

Thanks again for being responsive.

This is a user-to-user technical support forum. No one from Apple is listening.

Try unplugging your external hard drive. There is nothing about Lion that is known to cause kernel panics. If there aren't any 3rd party kernel extensions, then the next thing to look at is 3rd party hardware. There are many millions of other iMac owners, myself included, that have not had a single panic with Lion. Ergo, it can't be the operating system.

Gotcha. No more ranting, then. That was based on my limited experience, which was pre-Lion = smooth sailing, post-Lion = constant crashing. I should know that my part does not represent the whole.

I am extremely grateful for having this forum and people who are willing to give other users a helping hand.

I did unplug my back up before running the diagnostic recommended above. I'm in the middle of my first one hour deep probe as I type. We'll see if we have any hardware or memory issues, tonight. I dearly hope it is not anything in my backup, as I think the Time Machine is the most genious part of my machine.

Ah, memory failed the Rember test twice. They try to make the code intuitive, but I am not exactly sure what this means:
