Lately (since upgrading to Mountain Lion?) the Spotlight command-return trick to open the encosing folder of an item no longer works - it doesn nothing at all. Is anyone else seeing this? Is there any fix?

Same here. Equally command-i to open the info window for a file or program directly from Spotlight doesn't work anymore.
I made a safe boot today in another context and noticed that since then the problem seems to be resolved.
I had this bug too until I came across a fix for a seperate Archive Utility issue. The fix also fixed this Spotlight issue for me.
The fix is to kill a process called appleventsd in Activity Monitor. I'm not sure if the fix will survive a reboot.

(Before enabling the fix, try decompressing a zip file or bz2 file using Archive Utility and see does it just stall. You may have the Arvive Utility issue too)
