how do i connect to a network with cifs

I'm looking to buy a Netgear NAS drive and I have an issue trying to figure out how I'm going to connect with it.

I have macs running 10.6 and 10.8 and according to the manufacturers the only way to connect is using the CIFs protocols.

Does anyone have experience and knowledge to share on this kind of set up and if this is the best way to set up a home NAS systems?

The other question I have is I read that a CIFs configured networks can only handle file sizes under 4gb, is this true?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
