Upgrading To Hybrid Hard Drive SSHD, H-HDD

Hi there,

I am to upgrade the 2.5" 5400rpm 250gb hard disk drive in my 13" MacBook Pro (mid 2009). I want to increase both the capacity(to 750gb+) and thespeed significantly. An Apple genius suggested a Hybrid Hard Drive.

After looking on Amazon.co.uk, Ebuyer.com, Ebay.co.uk and Scan.co.uk but the only Hybrid Hard Drive I can find Seagate SSHD. Another Apple Genius said he would not recommend Seagate Hard Drives and that Toshiba make better faster Hybrid Drives (which he said Ebuyer sells). I can't seem to find anything other than the Seagate model.

This the Seagate Hybrid Hard Drive

(Seagate 750GB Momentus XT Serial 2.5 inch 7200 RPM 32MB 6GB/S SATA Solid State Hybrid Hard Drive)

I would appreciate anyones input on where I can get order a high quality Hybrid Hard Drive and general comments regading this subject.

Please note:

  • I'm miles away from being wealthy but quality ismore import that cost here.
  • I am not willing to remove optical drive / CD drive to accomidate
  • Please note I have already purchased a RAM upradge to increase the speed.

Thanks! 🙂

I also haven't heard great things about the Seagate hybrid drive, and have heard nothing about a Toshiba version. You may have already considered an SSD. The prices have been coming down, and a 250GB SSD is more reasonably priced today (the larger capacity SSDs are still expensive). To expand your storage capacity, you could have an external hard drive. If you need portabiltiy, a drive in a case like this might work.

Thanks for the quick reply 🙂

Yes, I have considered an SSD and ideally that's what I'd go for. But only if I could get one with larger capacity at the right price. I actually already have a 2tb external HHD. Unfortunately I really need something far bigger than 250gb internally.

What I'm looking for:

  • A reputable 2.5" internal drive
  • Capacity of 750gb+
  • Speed similar/same to an SSD
  • I have a flexible budget of around £150

What is is that makes the Seagate drives inferior? Strangely the Seagate hybrid drive that I'm looking at gets good reviews on Amazon.co.uk.

I hear both Toshiba and Western Digital have brought out or are about to release hybrids.

Cheers

Thanks for that Csound1,

  • Can anyone recommend any other hybrid hard drives?
  • Csound1 the two Seagate 750XT drives you have, I assume are they're the same model as the one in the a link post in the first message?

Thanks

They are the same model, I also have 1 of the 500XT models and I had experience using the original (Windows only) 250 that Seagate produced. They all work but the 750 is fast, the 500 less so.

I have recently purchased Seagate 750 GB XT 2.5 inch Hybrid hard drive to upgrade my MBH Mid 2011 I used carbon copy to clone my exsisting HDD over to my new drive. I was able to boot into it using a USB and worked fine but when I plugged it in internally the drive wasn't recognised and all that came up during the boot was a folder with a question mark through it. Has anyone else been having this issue if so what did you do to solve.

Thanks

I can also speak highly for the Seagate Momentus XT 750GB drives. I have one in my late 2011 MBP and it has been working great for the little over a year I've had it. I have a second one in an external enclosure that I regularly clone my internal drive onto for backup/emergency recovery.

I had read about people with lots of issues with the Momentus XT 500GB drive, but that seems to have been resolved with the latest drive firmware update. I have also read from a few users using the Momentus XT 1TB drive running at 5400RPM. THey are having no issues with their drives either.

If you want performance for a reasonable price, I have heard that the Crucial M500 960GB SSD is on the market with an MSRP of only $599.99USD. Due to popularity it is hard to come by and some are "scalping" them for $800-$1200. Consider though that it is a 960GB SSD, so you get both space and SSD performance...
