Ipod classic 160gb freezes Itunes when connected

My Ipod version 2.04PC works fine with no issues. Checking the diags shows pending sectors 8 - realloc 0 - retracs 3

My Itunes is version 10.7.0.21 and it too works fine

When I plug in the Ipod it is recognized by Itunes and appears in the devices list. After a few moments I get a message from Windows asking to perform a disk scan as it appears files were not written correctly or something to this effect. If I select Scan it will run but nothing appears to happen ( I let it run for 2 hours and it said it was still running under proceses in task manager but little to no disk activity visible. If I select don't scan, Itunes freezes up and trying to stop Itunes in task manager doesn't work and I need to do a reboot

any ideas as the Ipod is working fine
