I have a folder on my iMac that contains various items
png screenshots
pdf files
pages documents
jpeg images
Can such a folder be uploaded to the cloud?

No: iCloud does not provide general file storage. If you want to do this you will need to find a third-party solution - this page examines some options:

Thanks Roger. It's kind of disappointing to hear that because I had envisioned the Cloud as being something that you could dump anything on to. From your answer, I am assuming that the folder I posited above, can be placed into DropBox. Correct?

Yes - DropBox is an excellent solution, as also is SugarSync which I tend to prefer though I do use both for backup on different Macs. With DropBox you will have to place the folder in the special DropBox folder: with SugarSync you can keep it anywhere and nominated it to be synced. You also get more storage at the free level with SugarSync. (I have no connection with either firm.)
What happens when you upload a folder from your iMac to DropBox? Does the folder still remain on your iMac?

Yes - sending a file to any server or to an external hard disk always retains the original.
