Mac Mail problems receiving messages from Charter.net

I'm running Mac OSX Mountain Lion. I have Mac Mail configured for IMAP connection to charter.net and also to Gmail. Gmail works fine. However, I have problems receiving Charter email.

Get Mail does not retrieve new messages. Neither do I get new email every minute as configured in Preferences (General - Check for new email - Every Minute). However, I do get new email when I take the account offline and then back online.

Mailbox settings are as follows:

IMAP

User Name: name@charter.net

Password: *******

Incoming Server: imap@charter.net

Port: 143

SSL: Off

The fact that I can get email when I go offline/online implies that my mailbox settings are correct. I have no problem retrieving Charter IMAP mail using my iPad or my iPhone. Any other suggestions?

I have the exact same problem with my brand new iMac. I have been on the phone with charter and apple specialists for hours. Apple says that they are aware of the problem, and are not able to fix it because it's on charter's end. Charter says there's nothing that they can do. So it is not able to be fixed right now unless someone at apple and/or charter come out with an update that solves the problem.

My only work around right now is to log in my email at charter.net and re-direct it through a gmail account, and then that gmail account into apple mail.

I have the same problem. I decided to go to APple Mail because I just added a MacBook Air the I will be using on vacation. So I went through all the setting that charter suggests but no help. So I tried their "Trusted Advisor". Stehpen knew nothing so I started searching the internet. And here I am. I'm going to try to go back to Entourage on the iMac and MacBook. Please let me know if this gets fixed anytime soon.

This is a less then ideal kluge, but I added the Take Acconts Online/Offline button to the Mail toolbar. I then click it twice (first to take it offline and then back online) and Mail will then fetch any outstanding email. Otherwise, I have to wait until Mail decides to fetch new messages whenever it feels like, which, while it is several times per day, it is not timely for most new mesages.

Using new MacBook Pro with Mt. Lion. Spent two days trying to solve my Charter mail problem. Was able to access my mail at the charter.net website, but not on my computer. Here's what worked for me. Select Mail; under Mail menu, select preferences. Add Charter if not already on list.

1. Account information

Account Type: charter.net IMap

Description: Charter

Email: (your charter email address)

Full Name: (I just put in my given name)

Incoming: imap.charter.net

User name: (enter email address)

Password: (enter your Charter password)

Outgoing (smtp): Charter

Use only this server (did not check)

TLS Certificate: None

2. Advanced

IMap path prefix: (leave blank)

Port 143 (do not check SSL)

Authentication: (select Password)

Use IDLE command if server supports: checked

Hope someone else finds success with these settings.

I know this thread is old but I just switched from POP to IMAP for my Charter email on my iMac running Mountain Lion. I'm having this same issue where I have to either close mail and open it back up or take accounts offline and then back online in order to receive mail.

Does anyone have any new fixes for this issue by now?

By the way, Judithfrommichigan...the settings you recommend are the same settings that Charter tells you to use. My accounts were created using those settings and I'm having the problem.

This is definitely a Charter mail problem but they always refer me back to Apple. All other mail accounts work fine with the get mail button. I have been dealing with it for almost a year on my Macbook Pro. Until Charter fixes the issue you have two choices: Under the "Mailbox" menu, select Take all accounts offline" and then put back online, as mentioned before, or select "Rebuild" at the bottom of the same menu. Sometimes the "Synchronize charter" option works also but not always. Typical sub-par Charter quality. They need to spend more money on technology and less on their mis-leading commercials. Hope this helps.

I think both Apple and Charter are at fault.

The fact that Outook for Mac does not have a problem with Charter mail would indicate that there's a problem with Apple Mail.

The fact that Apple Mail works fine with other ISP mail services would indicate there's a problem with Charter.

Then you have the choice of not using Mail, not using Charter, or not using either of them.

After seeing how common problems with Charter are I know which I would choose.
