how do I set up my G Raid external hard drive on my iMac

just bought a brand new G Raid external hard drive to act as my time machine back up and external storage source for music and film. I have no idea how to set it up and to get things rolling I have simply plugged it in.

any suggestions?

There should be no need for setup on G-Tech drives. If you don't see it on the desktop, go to the Finder menu, then Preferences, and choose to view external drives on the desktop.

Note that it's generally not the best idea to have backup and primary (original) files on the same drive, even with a RAID, since you can't really back up those original files (music and film) onto the same drive.

Matt cool...

the G Raid drive has worked perfectly then it is my understanding that is rather limited

so I have a 4T drive which means that I have two drives of 2T

as this is acting as my Time Lapse on my iMac which gives me an automatic back up every 10 mins at the moment which I am guessing is to regular and I can change this?

Therefore I should buy a further drive (in spain at the apple store cost is 350 euros) and on this drive I should store all my content music and film as I should have a minimum of data stored on teh internal hard drive on the iMac itself to improve functionality?

does the same apply for my MacBook Pro? this is a mobile solution for film and music (final cut pro and logic) or do I use a solution that does not need an external power source?

any suggestion welcome

By default, Time Machine (that's what you're using, correct?) backs up once an hour. Unless you have a good reason to change it, I would leave that alone. Some people don't want the disk activity running that often (they need to run other programs which require a lot of resources, perhaps), and you can use Time Machine Editor to alter the frequency of backup.

You CAN have other files on the same drive as the TM backup drive - my warning was that, if the drive fails, you've lost both your music/film files AND your backups. For a mobile solution, you could also look at the Time Capsule, which is more expensive, but does mean you don't have to have the Macbook physically connected to it. Of course, it will only back up if you're in your home location.
