Trying to upgrade to the newest OS on my Mac ....HELP!

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. It is currently running Mac OS 10.5.8. I have been trying to upgrade to the newest OS but keep running into problems. I understand that I need to first upgrade to 10.6.1 and I have a Snow Leopard Install Disk. Every time I try to install this on my computer it says... "upgrade cannot be performed on this disk." Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Is it a gray disk? Or is it white with a snow leopard on it?

A gray disk.

Then that is a system restore disk, and not a retail upgrade disk. You will probably need to call Apple (1-800-MY-APPLE) and order one.

Gray discs are machine specific. You will need to purchase the universal Snow Leopard installer discs from a retailer.
