How to protect data from overwriting - external hard drive

I'm using external hard drives to back up photos and videos, but I couldn't find a way to permanently disable the possibility of writing (or overwriting) data.

I want them to behave like DVDs or Cds, where information is "closed" once burned. It's pretty dangerous to have years of work in a hard drive, and overwrite or delet something by mistake.

I tried to do that from the inspector, in the "Sharing and permissions" section, by changing privileges, allowing to read only, apply the changes; but at the end the system always allow me to write or erase data.

Any third party app to do this maybe?

Thanks!
