HDMI On Mac Mini Late 2012: Problem with hardware?

Just converted from PC to Mac.

Purchased latest mac mini (Late 2012 version)

Have tried several monitors through HDMI port and each time the picture quality is poor with very bad text resolution.

Have tried HDMI to HDMI and also tried HDMI to DVI adaptor.

This is with full 1080p 27 inch samsung monitor and HP 2010i monitor.

Is there a problem with the HDMI port on this new mac mini?

The monitors I have are fine and are crystal sharp when connected to PC.

Many thanks if you can answer this

OK. So I have now tried LG 27 Inch E2742 Monitor as follows:

1) Mini display to DVI-D : Picture good with decent text resolution

2) HDMI-HDMI: Picture poor with poor colour and text resolution. This is not a calibration issue.

The samsung monitor 27 inch series 3 also has poor picture and colour and text resolution with HDMI-HDMI. Again this is not a calibration issue. It does not have a DVI-D input to test the minidisplay port.

So it seems the HDMI port is not working properly but the minidisplay one is ok as I suspected.

From reading the other threads it seems this is a common problem including those people that have taken their minis back for an exchange and experienced same problem.

Is there likely to be a software update to resolve this?

Hello All,

I just purchased my 2012 mac mini andi'm suffering from the same problem. I connected my mac minii via HDMI to my Samsung 46" ES8000 and I have to say the picture and text quality is quite disappointing. I'm comparing this to my 2007 mac min ithat was connected via DVI and I have to say there is absolutely no comparison. No matter how much i try to calibrate it the colors are really over saturated, there is no good color depth, and the text quality is poor. I hope there is a way to fix it as I'm really relying on HDMI to connect as the new samsung dislplays don't have a DVI input.

I was about to buy a Mac Mini 2012 with the 2.6GHz upgrade and 1TB Fusion drive. Fortunately all these forum postings have made me hold off! I was planning on using both the T-Bolt and HMDI display out ports for two identical monitors. However it seems we have two issues, this blinking black/snow on the HDMI out and poor video quality on the HDMI out anyway (see other fora). It's a nightmare, but very little is mentioned in the tech press, bar the ARS Technica review (which couldn't replicate the issue) and Lockergnome.

Is there ANYONE out there with a 2012 Mac Mini that works perfectly on the HDMI out?

Is there ANYONE out there running two identical monitors on HDMI and T-Bolt without any comparative display differences?

I have the 2.3ghz Core i7 version and HDMI works fine EXCEPT with the HP 2311x LED monitor the resolution was restricted to 1080p and the text was fuzzy. Using the HDMI - DVI cable that comes with the Mini corrects the issue and allows you to set the digital resolution to 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz and the display is spectacular.

It's quite possible the HDMI interface on the display was the issue, I didn't bother to troubleshoot since it's working great on DVI.

Remember, if you are using HDMI - DVI it's the same port but conversion to DVI is done on the adapter vs. HDMI - HDMI which relies on the conversion within the monitor. IT's a monitor issue, not a Mac Mini issue IMHO. I noticed the same thing with my Windows video, DVI was always better.

Mac mini

model identification: Macmini5,1 + Lion, bought in europe 2012

1) Macmini works perfectly connected via HDMI to a Samsung Tv 40" with a cable which is not the adapter

given by Apple (apple HDMI adapter)

2) Macmini has problems when connecting to an Apple monitor LED Cinema Display with the apple HDMI adapter

In my case the problem was the Apple HDMI adapter cable, I changed that and Macmini works perfectly with

both monitors.

talking about the 2012 late mac mini 6,2 and all the minis from late October/November 2012, I think they had a serious issue with Intel HD4000 graphics, from my perspective I think it´s a driver/firmware fix, the mini forces to send "yuv" and a normal LED display such as samsung, Displays the image as a TV. some monitors support to change it to RGB but not all, I'm tired of trying cables and adapters.

and the only work around I found until this drivers/firmwares are updated to fix this mess is to use Thunderbolt to VGA =''( sadly but true. so my monitor catch the RGB color settings.

Apple/Intel please fix this ASAP.............
