No. Numbers cannot reference cells in another document. The best option is to place the data in different sheets of the same doc, or, if that is not acceptable, use MS Excel, LibreOffice or other office clone.

Hi Wayne,
One of the reasons I ask is I have a numbers doc, only about 2mb which I can open and update on my iMac running OSX Lion but when I try and open it on my iBook (white) OSX snow leopard I get an error saying document too large and won't.
I was hoping to split the doc to help.
Is this just a snow leopard thing as I can't upgrade my white iBook any further....
I am sorry. This is simply a limitation of Numbers as designed by Apple. It cannot reference cells in other documents.
How much RAM do you have on the iBook? You may be able to add RAM.
Hi Wayne, I think you hit the nail on the head.
I had 2 items runniing on my dashboard, once quitted this must of released enough RAM to enable numbers to open.
Now on the look out to upgrade my 2gig to 4gig.
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
