I just purchased an iPhone 5. Tonight when I tried to use the earpods for the first time, I get a ststic sound and the jack seems to be incorrect size Any suggestions?

Are you sure you pushed the jack all the way in?
If you think they're defective, bring them back for exchange.
It must be the phone, I tried them on my MacBook Pro and the sound is great.
I have now solved the problem. The Otterbox cover was preventing the jack from total insertion into the phone. I am now able to hear the great sounds that thes ear pods provide.
